Reverse sunset 🌅 I was almost too busy looking at the sunset to notice the colours developing behind me. It seems that no matter where you look on @wilsonisland_ there’s a gorgeous scene unfolding. Storm’s Brewing ⛈ The gateway to Wilson Island is Heron Island. You can get to Heron via boat, seaplane or chopper but Wilson Island’s launch special included chopper transfers - wahoo! - we travelled in style! Waiting for our transfer on the way back some dark clouds started to form. We only just made it off Heron Island in time - we had to scramble *to the chopper* in order to make sure we weren’t caught up in it or stuck on Heron. I wouldn’t have minded being stuck on Heron... . . Sky 🔥 It’s a tragic time in Australia at the moment. The media is full of horrific scenes as bush fires rage out of control, families lose everything, and wildlife in the hundreds of millions perish. It’s hard to watch on feeling helpless but it’s been heartwarming to see the global support and donations to our fire services, Red Cross, wildlife services and other charities - thank you, please keep it coming! However there’s another really important way you can help and that’s to support our tourism industry. There are still amazing places you can visit right now, like @wilsonisland_ in this shot, and in the coming months regions impacted by fire will be starting to get back on their feet - your tourist dollars will play a vital role in their recovery. Winging it 🕊 My main reason for visiting @wilsonisland_ was for the snorkelling and turtle action (snurtling!) but it was also a great opportunity to brush up my BIF (bird in flight) skills and I certainly gave it a good tern 🙄😂 pardon the pun. Paradise found ☀️💦🕊 Arriving onto Wilson Island is like stepping into a little paradise. It’s about 30 minutes by boat from Heron Island but it may as well be 30 years. Birds swoop down to greet you as you make your way through the pisonia forest to your tent where gorgeous island views await. Now the hard decision - should I laze on the beach, have a snorkel, enjoy a rosè on the deck, watch the birds building their nests, look for turtles...or all of the above?! 1 - arrival beach at Wilson 2 - our chariot from Heron 3 - one of only 9 luxe tents 4 - our deck view, it was tough but someone had to look at it . . . #onlyonwilson #wilsonisland #seeaustralia #thisisqueensland #openmyworld #myworldoftravel #bbctravel #tlpicks #fctglife #southerngreatbarrierreef #gladstoneregion

Splash 💦 That’s the way I ended 2019 - with a 💦. 2019 was a fairly tumultuous year and although I attempted to get back my photography mojo back, I failed. I didn’t fail to squeeze in a last minute snorkel trip to Wilson Island however, and it was a very relaxing and scenic way to end a busy year - I’ll be sharing more shots from Wilson in the coming days. Piss Alley 🍡🥟🍻 Don’t shoot the messenger 🙊 - this is actually how locals refer to this laneway known for after-work beer and nibbles near Shinjuku train station. Walking through this narrow alley is a feast for the senses - colourful lanterns crowd the lane, smoke billows out from tiny hole-in-the-wall establishments cooking yakitori, patrons clink beer glasses and chopsticks, and owners call out to tempt you into their shop. Oh deer... 🦌 On the island of Miyajima, a short ferry ride from Hiroshima, deer wander freely. While it’s lovely to be able to see wild animals so close, it also poses some problems with people forgetting they are still wild animals. Sadly, tourists are free to feed them any old 💩, and also free to get as close as they like. While some keep a respectful distance, many don’t. Unfortunately the deer don’t understand when you’ve finished handing out snacks and just want a photo. They also don’t understand that when you bop them on the head with your bag, it’s not an invitation to a head butt competition. It’s great to see the concept of responsible travel starting to find some traction however in places like this I fear the habits of decades are going to be hard to break - awareness and education is key.
